Five Things You Need To Know about Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos

San Jose del Cabo is the quainter of the two ‘Los Cabos’ and more spread out than Cabo San Lucas. However, when you have a resort that is a destination itself, you may not notice. Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos is a beautiful resort with all of the ingredients to have a fantastic holiday- great dining, service from the heart and well-appointed modern rooms.

5 Things You Need To Know About Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos

  1. 1. Hurricane Odile devastated the coastal area around San Jose Del Cabo two years ago including majorly damaging the Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos. Crisis turned to opportunity as the hotel was massively reconstructed over the course of the next year, re-opening in 2015. The results are spectacular and the resort is fresh and modern. When you walk into the grand lobby you are immediately drawn to the expansive view of the ocean. I took dozens of, nearly identical, pictures overlooking the grounds towards the ocean, as did many other folks. You can’t help it. Either it is really beautiful or the lobby is playing music with subliminal messages that makes everyone take pictures to help you market the hotel on social media. You will find many of the ameniites people come to expect beyond the spacious rooms like an excellent and serene spa, adults only pool and snack bar, Club level for upgraded rooms with a private lounge and patio, large fitness area witha  range of cardio and weight machines along with free weights, beach volleyball, swim up rooms, and so much more.

  1. 2. The dining is sensational. While going for a conference over a short period limited my ability to try all of the restaurants, I did my best. Breakfast was available at the buffet, quick bites from the coffee shop or you can enjoy in-room dining.  The breakfast was good but from that point forward everything was at, or above, my expectations. Highlights include both the sushi bar and the teppanyaki tables at Dozo, local catch of the day in the French restaurant Bon Vivant, Neapolitan pizza at Zaffiro and the varied food carts by the pool to keep you outside in the sun when you don’t feel like getting out of your swimmers. There is also 24 hour room service if you don’t feel like getting out of bed, or are preparing to get into it. The group meals were also excellent with both hors d'ouvres provided before our main meals and multi-course dining that would appeal to other conference goers or people celebrating weddings and special occaisions.

  1. 3. The beach is HUGE but the water may not be swimmable. Many resorts around Los Cabos have very strong currents and undertows and so for safety, swimming is not permitted. There are swimmable beaches around, but you need to get a ride and some local insight. However, the beach itself is stunning and you can walk for miles if you are so inclined. Beverage service goes right up to the beach beds & palapas. A nice person will bring you an umbrella if you have vampiric skin like me. There are also cabanas for rent. Starting into the water while listening to waves crashing into the sand was one of my highlights of the trip. If you face the water (as most of the rooms do) leave your window open and you can hear the waves at night. People buy cds (or whatever) with sounds like that, and it is part of the all-inclusive here!

  1. 4. While couples, conferences and single travelers will all be able to enjoy this resort, families will also love staying here. There is a kids club with a large outdoor area and splashpad – that I would like to try. There are regular programs to keep the kids active all day. There is also a teen club with many games, foosball, air hockey and pool. While there is evening entertainment, this is not a big party resort with late night bars or much entertainment in the wee hours. There was a loud patio bar at the mall across the street that can certainly help keep people out at night and more choices around town but for folks travelling with their kids, they will not have much FOMO. There are many optional activities and excursions to enjoy as well. I did hear a kid doing laps of the room above me, but it actually reminded me of home.

  1. 5. Both sunrise and sunset is beautiful here. The resort can’t take credit for that, but it is in a great spot to enjoy nature at its best. I was there for a conference so it was not all my own time. But for the last night, the conference was over and I made a point to see sunset. I missed the disc itself going behind the mountains, but was still able to enjoy the colours in the sky. I had issues getting out bed the first few days, as it is so darned cozy, with my drapes blacking out all of the light. On my final night, I kept them open and could see the sun was coming. The 6:30am wake up on a day off was worth it to see why worship of the sun is at the core of nearly every religion and culture – beyond the life giving energy and warmth it provides. I could sit on the sand and stare into the ocean for hours and the Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos provides a heck of a place to do that…with both tequila and tacos!

  1. 6. Okay, I said 5 but I do want to shout out the two tequilas I tried here and really enjoyed. Hornitos Black Label and San Mattias Gran Reserva are both worth sipping should you find your way down south. No pictures, just memories.
