Top 10 Australia Adventures

1. Great Ocean Road

The Twelve Apostles are one of Australia’s most striking sights.  Getting there is part of this remarkable experience.  The highway twists and turns along the glistening coastline and passes through small surfer towns.  I booked a day trip with Sightseeing Tours Australia who provide an entertaining experience. The driver picked us up first thing in the morning, providing tea, lunch and sing-a-longs, then dropped us off after sunset.  If you have more time, I recommend renting a vehicle and taking two to three days to emerge yourself in the beauty of the coastline.

2. Blue Mountains

These blue-hazed beauties sit on the outskirts of Sydney.  Take a day off to venture outside of the city to do some hiking, swim under waterfalls, meet Aboriginals and hear compelling stories about the prominent Three Sisters.

3. Byron Bay

This hippie town is an Australian icon.  The citizens are the friendliest that I’ve ever met and their chilled back lifestyle is captivating.  This tiny town has a big city vibe as it’s filled with fabulous restaurants and an astonishing range of activities.  It lies along a dazzling coastline with remarkable hiking trails.  The best time to hit the beaten track is at sunrise, when the air is cool and the crowds are sleeping soundly.  To refuel afterwards, be sure to to grab a bite at Beloporto Burger.  This hidden gem is in the heart of town and has the yummiest burgers.

4. Ocean Kayaking

Ocean kayaking is a thrilling experience, above all during whale migration.  If you’re keen to spot whales in their natural habitat, this is the way to do it.  I embarked on this adventure mid-September (peak migration season).  In the distance, frolicking in the water, was a mother humpback and her calf.  It is against regulations, not to mention dangerous, to approach sea life.  Out of curiosity, the mother whale approached us, breaching only meters away from the kayak.  My heart was pounding with nervousness and excitement from the thrill of being so close to that majestic mammal.

5. Feeding Kangaroos

Kangaroos are adorable and, if you’re lucky, you’ll spot them in the wild.  If an encounter is what you’re looking for I suggest visiting the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary in Brisbane.  The kangaroos roam freely in a large pasture and guests are welcome to walk among them.  For only a couple dollars you can purchase a bag of pellets and feed these cuties.

6. North Stradbroke Island

Abundant with natural beauty, North Stradbroke Island (Straddie as the locals call it) is near Brisbane yet presents itself as a whole other world.  It’s the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of the big city and emerge yourself in island life.  Jump on a ferry from Cleveland to Dunwich (approximately 25 minutes), then hop on a bus to Point Lookout.  You will be welcomed by turquoise waters, pods of wild dolphins, cliff sides and countless beaches.

7. Lake Mckenzie

Never have I ever swam in a fresh water lake that resembles a swimming pool.  Not until I went to Lake Mckenzie.  This glorious swimming hole is located on Fraser Island, a prominent tourist attraction.  It is a perched lake, meaning it only contains rain water.  The powdery white sand compliments the alluring blue-green water.  Basic facilities are available in designated areas, suitable for camping and picnics.

8. Whitsunday Islands

Welcome to a traveler’s wonderland of sun, sand and sailing.  More than 90 islands make up this vast area, most of which are unoccupied.  Airlie Beach is a primary gateway to the islands where countless companies offer sailing trips.  Book in advance if you have your heart set on a particular boat or sail date. Otherwise, take advantage of last minute deals that these companies offer.  Whitehaven Beach, located on Whitsunday Island, is undeniably Australia’s finest tropical beach and is not to be missed.

9. Great Barrier Reef

The Great Barrier Reef is one of the World’s Great Wonders.  Floating among the aquatic life and vivid coral is like entering King Triton’s kingdom.  There’s something new to discover every time you visit. Whether you swim over it, float over it in a glass bottom boat, or fly over it, this colourful field of coral is not to be forgotten.  Cairns is the main gateway and offers countless adventures to the reef.

10. Sydney Opera House

When you think about Australia, what comes to mind?  Perhaps surfers and kangaroos, but definitely the Sydney Opera House.  Whether you gaze at it from afar or wander backstage, there’s no denying that it’s monumental.  My favourite views of the Opera House are from floating on Sydney Harbour and while wandering indoors on a tour.  Though, I do believe the most remarkable way to experience this icon is through a performance.  That’s when this beauty really shines.
