TOP 5 ADVENTUROUS THINGS TO DO IN THE AZORES

Sometimes I sit down and am amazed by the amount of travelling that I have done in just the past 8 months.

Last November Rich and I travelled to the Azores and today I want to share a little bit about that trip but I don't want to bore you with all the little details.  So I have concocted a couple of Top 5 lists for you to check out.  Maybe you will see something you like that will make you want to go.  If you do.... I don't blame you! It was spectacular in so many ways.

Let me just start by giving you a very brief description of where and what The Azores are.  I am not here to give you a Geography lesson but I feel that this may be important.

The Azores is a group of mainly 9 islands in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.  It is a part of Portugal.
The islands were formed by volcanoes and it is very evident in the landscape (as you may see in my photos).

Rich and I LOVE the outdoors so I am going to start with some Outdoorsy top 5! PS Check out my joke of the day at the bottom

Top 5 Adventure Activities in the Azores

1)  HIKING - There are over 20 official trails across the island that are all unique in their own way.  Pop in to one of the Tourism offices and ask as they have individual trail maps for all of them to help you along the way!

2) MOUNTAIN BIKING BIKING - If you didn't bring your own, head on down to the Main pier in downtown Ponta Delgada. There is a company that has them for rent for about 22 - 30Euro a day depending on how advanced a rider you are and your bike preferences.  Either way they were great quality bikes!  The roads out of town may be a bit tricky as it is a European town/city and the roads are narrow!  Once you get up into the mountains you will have more room and cars are a little sparse.  You will notice that I don't have photos of us in action as I was too ill at the time to mountain bike.  We talked about it a lot... It would have been amazing!  Here is just a small taste of the puddles I could have ridden through!

3) CANYONEERING
 - Not something I got to try due to health issues however I would have loved to!  Tour companies are offering this everywhere but one notable company we came across.

4)SURFING - One of the main reasons we decided to go to the Azores was to get some surf lessons but it was far too cold for us in November!  We did go and spend some time along the south shore watching the experienced surfers in wetsuits and all.  Fun!  (I did finally get to try it in Hawaii 4 months later but that is another story!)
AZORES SURF CENTRE

5) SUPing - Near and Dear to my heart!  Again it was far too cold for us to try this out but this growing sport is definitely available in the Azores!  The calmness of nature would be very evident here and I would love to go back and try it out.  You can SUP the crater lakes or even get into the ocean for a different experience!
AZORES ADVENTURE ISLANDS

Honourable Mention.... CAVING (OR SPELUNKING) - I Had to put this in as we did really enjoy going into a Lava Tube.  It is located right in Ponta Delgada.  The only reason why it didn't hit my Top 5 List was because you can't really explore it as it is highly regulated.  You travel under the main highway in it and they have had to reinforce it.  Either way it was really cool and a highlight for us!

If you are interested in the Azores and would like to see more photos, I am happy to post my personal slideshow for you.  I create them so that we have something quick that we can have a look at and reminisce so it may be a bit long and of course I had to change the music :)
Enjoy!
