I don't even know where to begin with my assessment of Colombia as a country.  I saw only a small part of it and I had preconceived notions as to how people conducted themselves.  The precautions that I was told to take were severe and controlled my perception of the country.

These precautions made my first few moments in Colombia very stressful.  I had strict instructions on how to catch a taxi cab from the Barranquilla airport to my hotel.  The instruction were not full proof and of course, we ended up having to put our faith in fate that we arrived safely to the hotel that we had prebooked.  

The drive from the airport to the hotel took us through parts of a city that had living conditions that we were not accustomed to seeing.  We had come across similar sights in other trips however it had been awhile and you forget.....  

Was the cabby really taking us to our hotel?  
Everytime we slowed down I wondered if it was then that we would get robbed... as per the stories that I had read online.  

When we arrived safely at our hotel after midnight on Halloween night, I breathed a sigh of relief.  The driver gave us a smile that made me feel silly for feeling the way that I had felt.  At that moment, I realized that it was just like anywhere else.  We were going to be fine and Colombia was going to present us with an experience of a lifetime.  I was not disappointed!

Please don't get me wrong.  You do have to be careful.  Bad things happen to good people and often inflicted by desperate people.  It wasn't difficult at all to avoid these situations.  The people of Colombia that we came across proved to be very accomodating and generous.  How much more can you ask?

So much time and effort wasted on worrying about circumstances that would never come to pass.
